South Africa has pledged crucial support for South Sudan’s landmark general elections set for December 2026, offering to print ballot papers and provide essential electoral materials.

The commitment was made following high-level talks in Pretoria between President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Salva Kiir, where both stressed the need for credible, transparent elections in Africa’s newest nation.

President Kiir reaffirmed South Sudan’s dedication to holding elections as per the Revitalised Peace Agreement, but noted significant technical and logistical challenges ahead.

He appealed for international help, particularly in ensuring all ballot materials and voter registration needs are met.

President Ramaphosa responded by confirming South Africa’s readiness to supply both expertise and materials, aligning with wider African Union efforts to stabilize South Sudan’s democratic transition.

Discussions also addressed economic partnerships, with Kiir inviting South African investment in sectors like mining, tourism, and oil.

Both leaders concluded by strongly reaffirming their commitment to peace, development, and closer ties.
